Ovarian Cysts

Overview

 

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs formed in the ovary. Their growth is very common in women of childbearing age ie 20-35 years or after menopause. Generally, most cysts are non-cancerous but in certain cases, it could be cancerous as well. The most common symptom of this disease is a pain in the pelvis area, so if you experience pain in the region it is advisable to perform a pelvic exam to determine the cause of the pain.

 

Types of Ovarian Cysts

 

  • Functional cyst : This is the most common type of ovarian cyst and usually has no defined symptoms. Functional cysts often go away within 6-8 weeks, without treatment
  • Teratoma : This type of cyst contains different kinds of tissues like skin and hair. These cysts may be present from birth but can grow during a woman’s reproductive years
  • Cystadenoma : Cystadenomas form from ovarian tissue, and are filled with a watery, mucus-like liquid. They may grow large in shape which might cause painful twisting of the ovary(ovarian torsion)
  • Endometrioma : Endometriomas are ovarian cysts caused by a condition named endometriosis, in which the tissue that usually lines the uterus grows in other locations.

 

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

 

In most cases, Ovarian Cysts do not have any striking symptoms and many of them are detected during a pelvic exam or imaging testing. However, some larger cysts may cause a sharp ache in the abdomen and excruciating pain during certain activities like bending or turning side while sleeping.

Treatment of cysts depends on numerous factors like age, symptoms, and type of cysts. Depending on the condition of the cyst, the treatment options may differ. Some of the treatment methods include:-

Surgery:Common surgical methods like Cystectomy(Procedure in which the cyst is removed while keeping the ovaries intact), Oophorectomy (surgical procedure in which the entire ovaries are removed ) and Hysterectomy (a surgical procedure that is advisable if the cysts are cancerous)
